Zig Ziglar Biography – Zig Ziglar was born in Coffee County, Alabama, as Hilary Hinton Ziglar. He was arguably one of the most influential speakers of the 21st century, known as a motivation guru. Growing up, he experienced a challenging childhood which helped him learn to connect better with people. He moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi, and then to New York City not long after.
Ziglar was also a World War II veteran who became one of the top sales people in many different organizations. After that he became a motivational speaker and trainer, teaching his skills to tons of people through seminars around the world. He’s written over two dozen books and has impacted the lives of millions. His speaking career spanned 5 decades and left him a legacy as a god among salespeople.
Zig married his wife Jean when he was 20 years old in South Carolina. He once said “I’ve always believed that when you get married, you’re supposed to court the person you married forever.” He and his wife eventually had three girls, Suzan, Cindy, and Julie, and a boy, Tom. In 1965 shortly after his son Tom was born, he attended a motivational seminar he was supposed to be an announcer for. The speaker didn’t show up for the seminar, and Ziglar ended up having to give his own speech. This was the beginning of his motivational speaking career.
Jean was always a huge source of inspiration and support for Ziglar’s career. She was known by many to stand beside her husband at all times; their daughter Cindy Oates said “It’s like they’ve been on a honeymoon for 65 years.”
In 2007, Ziglar fell down a flight of stairs and was left with short-term memory loss. He went on to continue his tour schedule with onstage assistance from his daughter, having to cancel some events. He was able to overcome many challenge his condition presented, and continued to live a happy life until his passing in November 2012 due to pneumonia. Zig Ziglar died at 86 years old.
